Association with World Health Organization:

During the four years (2007 to 2011), I have been actively involved in the various health and mental health programmes of WHO-Iraq office.

  • One of my first involvements was with the development of a research project and the execution of the same as part of the research methodology initiative of WHO-Iraq. It is gratifying to note that the result of the research has been published as a letter to the Editor in The Lancet in 2006 and due to be published in the WHO Regional health Journal.

  • The second major involvement was with the Iraq family Health Survey-Mental Health survey. I have been involved as investigator from the Kurdistan region from the planning stage of the survey. I was responsible for the translation of the CIDI to the two Kurdish languages, namely Badini and Surani. This task had to be undertaken within a time bound manner and required me to work in close collaboration with the WHO office and the professionals of Kurdistan. I have richly contributed in the preparation of the preliminary and final Report of the mental health survey.

  • The third major contribution has been in developing the Iraqi version of the Life skills education manual. This again is an area of high priority for Iraq, as large proportions of children are traumatized by the ongoing conflict situation. My experience and expertise as a child psychiatrist was a valuable contribution to this effort.

  • The fourth contribution was working as mental health medical officer with WHO Iraq office in Amman for the period of June 15 to October 1, 2008.

  • Working as temporary advisor to WHO – EMRO in Cairo for the period 18 – 23/10/2008, participating in consultation on Life Skills Education manual development.
